KARACHI, Pakistan - Dr. Seemin Jamali, former executive director of the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), died on Saturday night at 61, according to her family.
Dr. Jamali, also known as 'iron lady' or 'bullet lady,' was said to be in critical condition earlier this week after her health deteriorated significantly.
One of Pakistan's most successful and well-known doctors, the medic was treated in a private hospital's intensive care unit (ICU).
In 2020, Jamali was diagnosed with colon cancer.
After her oxygen levels dropped, she was placed on a BiPAP machine. Dr. Jamali's husband stated that she was admitted to the hospital after her condition deteriorated on Friday.
Dr. Jamali's journey began in Nawabshah, where she attended medical school before joining Jinnah Hospital, a government facility to serve the people of Pakistan.
In November 2016, she began her tenure as executive director of JPMC, one of the country's largest public healthcare facilities.
She had been the hospital's face and the first point of contact whenever there was a medical emergency in Karachi since then.
She retired from the service in August 2021.
Jamali was awarded the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz (Medal of Excellence) for her outstanding medical contributions.
