DHAKA, Bangladesh - On Thursday, Bangladesh and the European Union (EU) expressed a willingness to sign a "partnership cooperation" agreement to take their relations to the next level.
However, it is still in the early stages, as extensive discussions and negotiations, the parties say, are required.
Md Shahriar Alam, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Enrique Mora, Deputy Secretary General of the European External Action Service (EEAS), expressed the willingness of both parties to establish such a mechanism.
Thursday evening, they briefed the media jointly amid the first "political dialogue" at the state guesthouse Padma.
For the first time, the two sides met in such high-level discussions to provide strategic guidance and intensify foreign and security policy cooperation.
State Minister Shahriar Alam led the Bangladesh delegation, while Enrique Mora, Deputy Secretary General of the EEAS, led the EU delegation.
The dialogue covered topics of mutual interest, such as peacebuilding, conflict prevention, the Indo-Pacific, the Ukraine war, connectivity, climate change, security, and counter-terrorism.
Charles Whiteley, the EU Ambassador to Bangladesh, was also present.
When Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen met the Deputy Secretary General of the European External Action Service in Brussels in October 2021, the two sides agreed to begin the political dialogue.
