NARAYANGANJ, Bangladesh - Two seventh-graders from a Narayanganj school are being treated in the intensive care unit of a nearby hospital after being thrashed by a teacher.
On Saturday, the incident occurred at Haji Nur Uddin Ahmed High School in Rupganj upazila.
Tanjila Akter, 14, and Samia Simi Nishi, 13, are the victims.
According to the case statement, the school administration announced on Saturday that it would close for the Eid-ul-Azha holidays in a few days.
Some seventh-grade students, including Tanjila and Nishi, were overjoyed by the announcement and were playing with spangles on the school grounds, which irritated their teacher, Jasim Uddin.
Jasim summoned the two teenagers to his office and began caning them, striking them on the head and chest.
When the poor students were about to collapse, Jasim admitted them to the local hospital without informing their parents. He contacted them later when their condition had deteriorated.
Tanjila and Nishi were later transferred to the hospital's intensive care unit (ICU).
According to locals and school sources, Jasim was previously accused of rape and murder and was imprisoned multiple times.
However, they claimed that Jasim was protected because of his connections with society's elite.
Authorities are investigating the case, and the students have declared they will take to the streets if Jasim is not punished.
