KATHMANDU, Nepal - According to the Department of Forests and Soil Conservation, 90 settlements in Salyan are at high risk of landslides this year. Over the last decade, landslides have impacted over 2,000 families in the district.
Several settlements in the district are vulnerable to landslides this monsoon.
According to data from the District Administration Office of Salyan, landslides have killed more than two dozen people in the last ten years. Due to the risk, more than three dozen people have left their settlements and relocated to other places.
Despite the high risk of landslides, the Disaster Management Committee has yet to implement disaster mitigation and control policies.
According to residents, several Salyan settlements have been subjected to landslides due to haphazard road construction initiated by local units in rural areas.
Dan Bahadur Khatri, chairman of Kalimati Municipality, one of the district's worst-affected local units, said the municipality does not have enough budget to spend on disaster management and must rely on the federal government to intervene in the event of a major disaster.
