CHITWAN, Nepal - Conservationists and animal lovers have expressed concerns after a rhino was discovered dead in a freshly excavated roadside ditch along the Bharatpur-Gondrang road segment in the Chitwan Park on Sunday.
According to officials, the trench was excavated to lay a drainage system.
According to the Chitwan National Park, the rhino died due to the Road Division Office in Bharatpur's gross incompetence.
"I call this a murder because the innocent animal died owing to the sheer incompetence of road officials," said Rampreet Yadav, a former chief conservation officer.
According to park officials, the rhino was a male about 11 years old.
On Sunday, Ganesh Tiwari, the National Park's information officer, told the press that it happened when two rhinos fought and the loser, who was being pursued, breached the park's fence as it raced, hit the road's retaining wall, and fell into the ditch.
The National Park administration intends to sue the Road Division Office.
Anyone convicted of killing a rhino faces up to 15 years in prison and a fine of Rs 1 million.
Tiwari informed that 21 rhinos have died in Chitwan in six months.
